Willy Street Criterium Masters 123

May 15, 2011

The course was not actually on Willy Street this year but was on the old practice crit in Fitchburg.  There were 15-20 mph head wind down the long finishing straight.  I spent the most of the race ensuring that I was out of the wind down the finishing straight which meant that I was in the gutter every lap, but I was resting.  There was a slight side wind which pushed the pack into the gutter.  If you were on the left side, you were pushing the wind.  I took it easy until about 12 laps to go, when I started moving up.  Once at the front, I bridge up to what I though was someone who was also trying to break away, but I think he might have been going for a prime.

I had planned to use this race to test my fitness so I ramped up the effort.  During my first 5 mins when I attacked I set a new max 5 min of 399 watts and good 10 min at 357.  Normally, I am only able to hit these kind of numbers during training so I was happy to see good numbers in a race.  I was off for about 5 laps when one guy bridged up, and then 2 more.  On the last lap, I could see that the field was starting to close in on us.  I panicked and lead out the sprint.  I should attacked rather then lead out the other three guys.   The first guy (Tommy) that bridged up won and then a guy (Brent, the same guy that I though was attacking) from the field got second.   I ended up finishing eight but I was happy with my effort.

Below is the power file with Yellow power lines at 300, 500 and 1000 watts.  You can see the spot were I attacked with 10 laps to go in the race.  The red lines are HR at 150 and 160.

For comparison, I included the power file from the following race that I did.  The video did not record so I was not able to post it but here is the file and the summary data.  The race was faster but I also was just riding the race for some extra training.  The interesting point for me was that the masters race I only had one peak over 1000 watts while the p123 race I had 5 over 1000.
